Common workplace accidents in Lawrenceville, Georgia
What to do after a workplace injury or illness in Lawrenceville
If you’re a resident of Lawrenceville and have suffered a work-related injury, you should take action as soon as possible. First and most importantly, seek medical help. Next, notify your supervisor to get the process going and start a paper trail.
Don’t wait too long to file a workers’ compensation claim or insurance companies could view your injury as illegitimate. Also, injured workers must file their claim before the Georgia statute of limitations on work injuries expires. A workers’ comp claim must be filed within 1 year from the date of the accident.
When it’s time to file a formal workers’ compensation claim, you will be asked to include details about your injury and situation, which generally includes the location of the injury on your body, where and how the injury occurred, time and date, and potential witnesses.
It’s important to attend all follow-up medical appointments, and we suggest refraining from posting on social media.
If you suffered a work-related injury while on-the-job, follow these important steps:
- Seek medical attention immediately.
- Notify your supervisor or manager.
- Consult a workers’ compensation attorney near you.
- Start the workers’ comp papertrail by filing a claim. (Injured workers who fail to report a work-related injury within 30 days could lose their right to receive workers’ comp benefits.)
- Visit your employer’s approved doctor for any follow-up treatment.
- Attend all doctor’s visits and physical therapy.
- Refrain from posting to social media while you’re on the mend.

Workers’ comp benefits available to injured workers in Georgia
Many states, including Georgia, have strict deadlines for injured workers who are seeking workers’ compensation benefits. Once you report the incident and are receiving treatment, the process has officially started. Depending on your specific circumstances, our work injury lawyers can find out if you are entitled to receive compensation for the following expenses:
- Medical costs. Your employer’s workers’ comp insurance should cover any expenses regarding medical diagnosis and treatment of a job-related injury. Emergency room, hospital and doctors visit bills should all be covered, as should prescription drugs and travel expenses (to and from medical care).
- Lost wages. Roughly two-thirds of your lost wages should be paid weekly, up to a certain cap. The two types of wage replacement benefits available are known as total temporary disability (TTD) and total partial disability (TPD) benefits.
- Permanent disability expenses. Following medical treatment, your physician may determine that you suffer from a certain level of “permanent” impairment, which may allow you to qualify for permanent partial disability (PPD) benefits. PPD benefits are weekly payments that kick in when you are no longer receiving TTD or TPD wage replacement benefits. You may be able to get this payout even if you return to work.
- Death benefits. If an employee is killed while on the job, these benefits are paid to the worker’s dependents (child or spouse) to cover funeral costs and lost wages.
Often, those who suffer hearing loss, loss of eyesight, or the complete loss of a body part due to amputation may be entitled to additional benefits.
Don’t take your employer at their word if they say your workplace injury isn’t covered.

About Lawrenceville, Georgia
The historic town of Lawrenceville was chartered in 1821 and is considered the oldest city in the Atlanta metro area. The town gets its name from American Navy Commodore James Lawrence, who gave the famous command during the War of 1812: “Don’t give up the ship!” Shortly after the town’s founding, the first permanent structure erected was a courthouse.
For much of its early history, Lawrenceville was a farming community and surrounding families came into town to purchase various goods or trade livestock. Lawrenceville slowly grew as new families migrated into the area and railroads were built nearby. Until the first paved road was built in 1929, Lawrenceville locals primarily got around by riding mules.
Clearly, things have changed a great deal since those mule-riding days. The city’s population grew steadily through the early 20th century as a number of major employers came and went in the area. The city more than doubled in population from 1940 to 1970, and again from 1980 to 1990, when it hit nearly 17,000 residents. Today, about 30,000 people call Lawrenceville home.
Infamously, Lawrenceville was the scene of a shooting that had national repercussions. In a 1978 obscenity trial at the Lawrenceville courthouse, Hustler magazine owner and publisher Larry Flynt was shot by a gunman who was never identified. Flynt has been confined to a wheelchair ever since.
Oliver Hardy, of the comedic duo Laurel and Hardy, spent some of his youth in Lawrenceville. Other famous individuals to come out of Lawrenceville include retired pro wrestler Ric Flair, Ezzard Charles (the boxing champion who defeated Joe Louis in 1950), actor Michael Kelly (House of Cards, Man of Steel), actor Wes Chatham (The Expanse, The Help, Hunger Games) and Hee Haw regular Junior Samples.
