Common workplace accidents in Snellville, Georgia
What Snellville residents need to know about workers’ compensation
If you’re a resident of Snellville and have suffered a work-related injury, you must act as soon as possible. First and foremost, seek medical attention immediately. Next, notify your supervisor or manager as soon as possible to get the process started and begin building a paper trail. If you wait too long to file a workers’ compensation claim, your employer or the insurance companies might view your injury as illegitimate.
When it’s time to file a formal workers’ compensation claim, you will be required to include details about your injury. This includes the location of the injury on your body, where and how the injury occurred, the time and date, and potential witnesses. It’s important to attend all follow-up medical appointments, and to refrain from posting on social media.
If you suffered a work-related injury while on-the-job in Snellville, here’s a simple list of 7 important simple steps to take:
- Seek medical attention immediately.
- Notify your supervisor or manager.
- Consult a workers’ compensation lawyer near you.
- Start the workers’ compensation process by filing a claim. (Injured workers who fail to report a work-related injury within 30 days could lose their right to receive workers’ compensation benefits.)
- Visit your employer’s approved doctor for follow-up treatment.
- Attend all doctor’s visits and physical therapy.
- Refrain from posting to social media while you’re on the mend.

Benefits you can receive after a workplace injury or illness
As we’ve addressed above, it’s important to report the accident to your supervisor and get a paper trail started as soon as possible. This is because many states (including Georgia) have strict deadlines in order to qualify for workers’ compensation benefits.
Depending on specific circumstances such as the severity of your injury, you may be entitled to receive the following benefits if you’re injured on the job:
- Medical benefits. Your employer’s workers’ comp insurance should cover any expenses regarding medical diagnosis and treatment of a job-related injury. Emergency room, hospital and doctors visit bills should all be covered, as should prescription drugs and travel expenses (to and from medical care).
- Lost wages. Roughly two-thirds of your lost wages should be paid weekly, up to a certain cap. The 2 types of wage replacement benefits available are total temporary disability (TTD) and total partial disability (TPD) benefits.
- Permanent disability benefits. Following medical treatment, your physician may determine that you suffer from a certain level of “permanent” impairment, which may allow you to qualify for permanent partial disability (PPD) benefits. PPD benefits are weekly payments that kick in when you are no longer receiving TTD or TPD wage replacement benefits. You may be able to get this payout even if you return to work.
- Death benefits. If an employee is killed while on the job, these benefits are paid to the worker’s dependents (child or spouse) to cover funeral costs and lost wages.
Sometimes, those who suffer hearing loss, loss of eyesight or the complete loss of a body part due to amputation may be entitled to additional benefits.
Don’t take your employer at their word if they say your workplace injury isn’t covered.

About Snellville, Georgia
Snellville is a tight-knit community located in Gwinnett County, about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta and roughly 45 miles west of Athens. The city lies at the intersections of US Highway 78 and Georgia 124. While the city has around 20,000 residents today, it didn’t start out nearly that big. In fact, Snellville was practically a 1-man, 1-house kind of town when it was founded back in 1878.
It all started in 1874, when 2 friends from London, England were conspiring to voyage to the United States. James Sawyer and Thomas Snell plotted to leave England at age 17, but Snell’s parents intervened and wouldn’t allow him to go. Sawyer and his brother Charles went without Snell. A year later, Snell was able to join his friends and they all worked together on a farm in Madison County, Georgia.
Eventually, Snell established a homestead near Stone Mountain and called the settlement Snellville. The town slowly began to grow as more settlers put down roots in the area. Snell died in 1896, at the age of just 39 due to complications from an appendicitis operation.
Over the next 100 years, Snellville grew slowly but steadily, especially in the 1960s when people began to settle outside Atlanta. Today, more than 1,100 businesses call Snellville home, along with 14 churches. The town truly lives up to its slogan: “Everybody’s Somebody in Snellville.”
A few notable people hailing from Snellville include actor Michael Kelly, singer/songwriter Clay Cook, Today Show co-host Amy Robach and USA Olympic swimmers Amanda Weir and Eric Shanteau.
